Why prefer natural solutions against ants?

Chemicals of all kinds that allow us to eliminate small bugs that sometimes swarm both inside and outside our home.

It is true that regularly suffering from ant colonies is not pleasant, and it is legitimate to want to eradicate them, or at least move them away from our little bubble (garden/house, balcony/apartment). But in this case, we act with some consideration using only natural and environmentally friendly anti-ant solutions .

Chalk, a great ant repellent

Chalk has no equal in creating an impassable barrier for ants. It is very easy to use, as it does not require any particular preparation. It is enough to draw one or two chalk lines on the ground, on the terrace, the driveway, the balcony or in front of the threshold of the house and on the edges of the windows to avoid the intrusion of ants. It's radical. After a good rain, of course, it is necessary to repeat the operation because the chalk is simply erased with water.

Black soap to eradicate ants

Polyvalent black soap is unconditional in the garden and at home because it is, among other things, an enemy of ants, but also of mealybugs or aphids. To permanently remove ants, it is necessary to dilute the black soap in boiling water according to the dosage indicated by the manufacturer, clearly on the packaging. Then simply pour this still very hot mixture over the nest or ant colony.

Baking soda to keep ants away

Baking soda costs a few euros and does a lot of good without harming the environment. Putting this white powder on the passage of the ants is enough to see them disappear in a short time.

Lemon peel against anthills

The acidity of lemon does not please ants. You can put zest in its nest and pour the juice of a squeezed lemon.

Fresh basil leaves to dislodge ants naturally

We kill two birds with one stone with potted basil, as it is as effective against ants as it is delicious in the kitchen and virtuous for our health. If we appreciate their taste and smell, it is far from being the case with these hymenoptera. A few judiciously placed leaves over the passage of the ants are enough to scare them away.

Glue to protect fruit trees from ants

It is a pity to stop harvesting the fruits because they are infested with ants. To protect the trees in the garden, in garden centers you can get tail strips to stick on the trunks of the trees. This natural solution prevents ants from climbing the fruit and also acts as a barrier for many other insects.

Ground coffee against ants

We no longer throw away the full filters after we have prepared the coffee, but recover the wells that we place as they are at the foot of the plants. This forces the ants to move away without killing them. Therefore, coffee wells are a natural and eco-friendly insect repellent solution that ultimately costs nothing.

Essential oils to scare away ants

The essential oils in the water from scrubbing the floor deodorize the house and prevent ants from invading the premises. Good results are obtained with true lavender essential oil (80 drops of lavender essential oil for 10 liters of very hot water).

Ants also do not like the smell of:

  • Cinnamon essential oil,
  • Peppermint essential oil.

Simply, a few drops can be placed near windows and doors to keep ants away.

Prevention of Ants in the Garden

We can start by adopting preventive attitudes so as not to have to fight against the colonies of ants that invade both the garden and the terrace, the balcony and the kitchen cabinets.

Some species of ants feed on the molasses that aphids deposit on plants, to the point that they breed it to make the most of this substance. That is why it is necessary to first resort to a natural and ecological antacid so as not to favor the installation of these ants.

This is the case of black soap and crushed garlic that is mixed with water. Then, simply spray the plants to get rid of the aphids. As for the ground coffee sprinkled directly at the foot of the infested plants, it gives an excellent result against aphids, ants, but also snails and also scares away cats in a completely natural way.

In the kitchen, it is better not to leave food in plastic bags because ants manage to pierce them. The ideal is to store everything in glass jars with an airtight cap or in iron boxes that close perfectly. It is effective in protecting food from ants, is much more decorative than sachets and reduces our waste.
